5 Sport and Leisure Tips

Sport and leisure are without doubt most people's favourite topics of conversation (after perhaps their family). Wherever men gather, you will hear them talking about football, baseball (it would be cricket in the UK) or golf. Similarly, women also talk about tennis, athletics, holidays, the gym and, increasingly, football. After all, who wants to hear you talk about your job?

The theory before computerization and mechanization was that once that state of nirvana had been achieved, we would all have more time for sport and leisure. It hasn't worked out like that. Most people are working longer hours now than their grandparents did, although admittedly, the work nowadays is less physically demanding, which is probably why the population is becoming obese. All the more reason for more sport and leisure time.
Below, I have put together some sport and leisure tips; some serious others not so. Enjoy your sport and leisure activities.

Speed walking: the craze for jogging is not as strong as it once was, but then it did present strain on the joints to many people. Better than jogging is speed walking. It has the same cardiac and aerobic advantages. There is no need to walk like a professional marathon walker. Just walk normally, but keep up a brisk, steady pace. Add in a few hills as you get more proficient (fitter). Swing your arms and get your blood pumping. Try to cover three miles, three or four times a week. 55 minutes is Ok; 50 minutes is good; 45 minutes is excellent. You will feel exhilarated when you are done, mentally very clear, ready for any challenge.

Cleaning Trainers: tennis shoes, or trainers in general in fact, get pretty smelly. If you want to bring your trainers back to their pristine, shop-bought condition, wash the outsides to remove any mud or dirt. Then wash them with your towels on the same cycle as you would normally do. Finally, put them in the tumble drier with the towels and half a sheet of that perfumed paper inside each. They will come out looking and smelling like new. Good enough for another week's bashing.

On The Ball: what do you do with dented ping-pong balls? They are not much good for anything but playing ping-pong, are they? Well, put your dented ping-pong balls in a deep pan of cold water and heat it up. The air in the balls will expand and the plastic will pop back into shape as good as new.

Old Balls: old tennis balls can undergo a face lift. First, light brush with warm, soapy water, then rinse and put in the tumble drier on a warm cycle. You won't recognize them when they come out.

Picking Winners: one British actor, Derek Nimmo, tells of his infallible way of picking winning race horses. His method is to chant: "Please Mr. Skinner, pick me a winner" and tick off one horse that he fancies for each word of the rhyme. Then, he recites the alphabet, looking at the seven horses he's pre-selected in turn for each letter. The first horse whose name matches the letter of the alphabet he's on will be the winner. Sounds as good as any other scheme I know.

Benefits of Leisure and Recreation

Although it may not seem so, in reality, Leisure and Recreation is the largest industry in the world. The benefits of leisure and recreation as an important part of life are easy to see. As an industry, it offers a variety of related employment and creates billions of dollars in revenue. Workers in parks and recreation, community agencies, sports agencies, youth development organizations, non-profit organizations, rehab and hospital agencies, the travel and entertainment industries all utilize and benefit from parks and recreation facilities world-wide. Additional benefits of leisure and recreation include environmental improvements from expanding green spaces, health benefits, and personal satisfaction benefits.

There are many civic benefits of leisure and recreation activities. Sports and youth activities offer leadership development for adults and children. Strong communities are built as parks become a hub of community life. Benefits extend to all ages, childhood, youth, young adults, families, and seniors. Both care for environment and wellness through green spaces are enhanced by beauty. This same beauty helps combat stress through the opportunity for mild exercise and mediation upon natural beauty. Wilderness experiences are available in some locations.

For personal benefits, leisure activities may include:
Hobbies
Exercise
Sports
Gardening
Crafts
Health
Coping
Family Bonding

Physical benefits include increased lung capacity from sports participation, plus reducing serum cholesterol and hypertension, increasing bone mass, strengthening the spine, reducing disease, increase in feelings of well being, reduction in stress hormones, improved attitudes and performances, and improved social skills. For childhood development, recreational areas assist in learning, can keep kids off the streets, and enhance their confidence. Studies confirm that physical activity can aid the learning process in children. Sports activities enhance large motor skill development and social skills. Adult leaders offer positive role models to children. Group sports are well known for promoting social support, networking, and developing friendships.

As if all the above is not enough to encourage support of leisure and recreational activities, consider the following additional benefits:

Stress management - the mild stress of leisure activity can reduce overall negative stress by contributing to relaxation.

Self esteem - especially in children and seniors, mild exercise, group activities, and hobbies and crafts will help create positive self images.

Positive lifestyle development - contributing to society, social interaction, development of leaders, being part of organized sports all encourage good lifetime activities.

Personal satisfaction - any creative outlet will enhance personal satisfaction. Being part of the leadership offers self satisfaction, and those who work in the recreational areas can feel the pride in keeping these areas vital and available to others.

Quality of life - fresh air, sunshine, social interaction, health benefits and self esteem all will improve quality of life.

Preventative health - regular exercise, physiological benefits from mild exercise, and stress reduction all are made easier by having leisure and recreational activities readily available.

Since the future seems to be headed for a shorter work week and more extra time, support of leisure and recreational outlets and locations would be prudent, and benefit all involved.

Leisure Time, Retirement Time

You've worked all your life and now you are looking forward to retirement. How will you spend your time?

Many people have not created balance in their lives between work and play, so when it comes to leisure time or retirement, they don't know what to do with their time.

If you no longer have to work, or you are working less, here are five areas that you can attend to regarding how you spend your time.

PHYSICAL HEALTH

Consider joining a gym, getting on a regular exercise program, taking up a sport, taking dance lessons, and/or learning yoga or tai chi. Leisure years can be filled with aliveness if you take excellent care of your health.

Do some research on nutrition and learn how to create healthy meals. There are many excellent books on achieving a high level of health, even in your later years. You might have years to live so you might as well learn how to live them in a vital and healthy way!

EMOTIONAL AND SPIRITUAL GROWTH

If you had not given much attention to your emotional and spiritual health - to the journey of your soul - now is a good time to do it. Now you have the time to read the excellent and inspiring books on achieving inner peace and joy. You have the time to attend lectures, workshop and seminars on healing the beliefs that may be limiting you, on connecting with your personal spiritual Guidance, and on taking loving care of yourself and sharing your love with others.

If you have never been introspective and taken the time to get to know your self on the inner level, now is a great time!

GIVING TO OTHERS

The most fulfilled people in life are those who find ways of giving to others and to the planet. If you have had to work hard all your life, you might not have had the time to volunteer or find other ways of helping. Now you have the time to explore what ways of giving really bring you joy. Would you enjoy volunteering at a day care center, sharing your love with little ones? Would you enjoy becoming part of a peer counseling group, supporting others in being all they can be? Would you receive satisfaction from becoming involved with groups that are helping the environment, helping the homeless, helping battered women and battered families, or helping abused children? Perhaps you would love to be involved with supporting the arts?

There are many fulfilling ways of giving and now you have an opportunity to discover which ways bring you joy.

CREATIVITY

Being involved in creative activities is one of the most fulfilling ways of spending time. What have you always wanted to learn to do? Do you want to learn to draw, paint, or make ceramic pots? Do you want to learn to work in wood, carving or making furniture? Have you always wanted to try your hand at writing, perhaps writing poetry, a novel, or a screenplay? Do you want to become an excellent chef? Maybe you want to learn more about interior design and home decorating? Perhaps you want to create a beautiful garden or learn about flower arranging? Have you always wanted to learn more about jewelry making, weaving, needlepoint, sewing or knitting?

Now is a great time to discover what creative activities being you inner peace and joy.

PLAY

You might find that your physical activities - golf, bowling, and so on are the ways you play. Or your creative activities may be the ways you play. You might also want to find other ways to play, such as playing board games, card games, or doing puzzles. You might enjoy computer games or the many games that are available through TV.

Don't let your leisure years be boring and unfulfilling. If you do not have to work, you have great opportunities to develop yourself in so many ways!

Do Women Really Have Less Leisure Time Than Men?

The Fijian United Nations Development Programme, is considering looking at consigning a value to the time people use up on unsalaried work. The latest report revealed that women in Suva spend 58 hours a week on housework, contrasted to males who only spend 8 hours.

The report also said that women in the tropical island nation of Vanuatu, voted the Happiest Country On Earth in 2006, have 25 percent less leisure time than men. (Who is kidding who, in a male dominated community?)

UNDP Pacific Centre manager says “It’s important to provide separated out data about the different roles men and women play in the community, if the UNDP is to understand how a particular policy might impact differently on different genders”. Without this type of information, the Centre understands it would be unable to plan workable programs or policies.

The word is out that most people have 45 minutes more relaxation time daily, than was available 40 years ago. Half of that is used watching television (report numerous experts). The average person in a Western nation allocates 2.5 hours a day to the relaxing diversion of watching television.

This break down of an average person’s day to day routine was published in 2006 from an unknown source.

Activity: Time Spent by Gender Marital Status

Men Women Married Single

Phone calls, mail, email 7 min 14min 8min 14 min

Caring for Non-household 13min 15min 13min 14min

Religious and civic duties 16min 21min 20min 17min

Caring for Family 20min 43min 45min 17min

Educational activities 28min 26min 7min 51min

Buying goods, services 38min 58min 53min 43min

Eating and drinking 1hr 18min 1hr 11 min 1hr 24 min 1hr 8 min

Household activities 1hr 20min 2hr 16 min 8hr 8 min 1hr 26 min

Work related activities 4hr 26min 3hr 4hr 1 min 3hr 18 min

Watching television 3hr 28min 2hr41 min 2hr 24 min 2hr 47 min

Personal care and sleep 9hr 13min 9hr37 min 9hr 8 min 9hr 46min

Then Harris Poll shared these results, in 2004, subsequent to a nationwide telephone survey:

· 35% of adults put reading top of their list.

· 21% would rather watch TV

· 20% liked to spend time with their family and friends

Harris Poll reported these three activities as having been placed at the head of the list every year since 1995. However, it is understood that technology such as the Internet clearly sways the use we make of leisure time.

There is one question that begs to be asked. How were these results arrived at and what is their ability to truly give an overall picture of life either in 2006 or 2009?

It certainly seems the more ‘time-saving-devices’ we are given, the less time we have to do the things we really want to do. Time is our most precious resource and must be used, protected, cared for and used wisely, just as we consider the expenditure of any of our other resources.

Outdoor Leisure Holiday Will Be Perfect For Your Family Life

Leisure holidays in Britain are increasing moving to the outdoor sphere as people regard the simple pleasures of outdoor life, and more affordable pricing a clear benefit. Outdoor leisure holidays generally fall into two main categories; these are caravanning or motor-homing and camping. Both options can be seen as a cost effective way to take a family holiday, while giving the chance to enjoy leisure activities and do the bonding that psychologists are so fond of. Here are a few outdoor activities and holidays that will be fun for you and your family.

Outdoor leisure activities have a wide variety of benefits; many will be healthy and help you improve fitness while others may give your brain a workout. Sports are a brilliant way to keep kids entertained and the perfect outdoor activity on a sunny day. It is easy when going camping or caravanning to take a sports set such as goalposts, a badminton net or cricket stumps as they are light and will not take a lot of room in your car. While you may think the outlay for the equipment may be expensive, the leisure time you will be able to have using them will surpass this cost. Depending upon the campsite where you are staying you may even be able to undertake waterskiing or kayaking as more active leisure pursuits.

The campsite you are staying at will have different leisure activities to keep the children entertained. Some may even have provisions for entertaining children so the parents can have time to relax and enjoy their holiday also. Many have bicycle hire facilities allowing you to get out into the countryside and enjoy the sublime scenery. Your ultimate goal when going on an outdoor leisure holiday is to have fun and enjoy yourself; whether this means letting the kids be entertained by a camp rep or taking them with you, the choice is yours.

There is so much to do on an outdoor leisure holiday. If you're staying within the mountainous regions of Britain such as the Lake and Peak districts it will be possible to undertake some more extreme pursuits. Maybe you should consider rock-climbing or abseiling as a pursuit that will entertain all members of your party. These kinds of activities not only help you bond with your family but can help build characteristics such as confidence. Canoeing and kayaking is a brilliant way to perform the same kind of activity if you happen to be a vertigo sufferer. After all, messing around on the river is the most English of outdoor leisure activities.

Camping is one of the best ways to get outdoors. It is not even the case that you must stay in campsites, although it is advisable. If you would like to undertake a trekking holiday, getting a lightweight tent and equipment is essential; hiking through some of the most beautiful scenery in Britain can be tiresome work, so having the right equipment will be a great help.

It is not just extreme activities that can form part of your outdoor leisure holiday. Sitting by the river, with rod in hand hoping to catch a fish is one of the most delightful experiences in life. You do not even have to catch a fish, sometimes the pleasure of fishing is just sitting in amongst beautiful scenery watching life on the river go by.

Outdoor leisure activities are so diverse that discussing them in one article is a Herculean task. You can be sure however that this type of holiday will be brilliant for you and your family. Getting out into the countryside and enjoying the simple pleasures of outdoor life is highly advisable. Just hope the infamous British weather holds out so you can actually head outdoors.

The Mental Health Benefits of Leisure Travel

For the economically disadvantaged community on both kids and adults alike, the mental health benefits of leisure travel presents vast significant and social improvement in their mental health outlook. Leisure travel brings about greater personal impact for the individual versus the person who has not traveled. Being able to get away and relax creates a wonderful sense of euphoria and excitement. Leisure travel is very important in reducing the amount of stress on both adults and children and even more so on those on a lower income scale. The quality of life is drastically improved, along with personal growth, fulfillment, and a higher self-esteem. As the disadvantaged person’s amount of personal travel increases, their depression and despondency decreases. Access to luxury travel increases an individual’s intellectual pleasure, reduces inherent poverty as it increases improvement in self-esteem and financial control.

Personal travel provides individuals with the opportunity to improve social skills, increases an individual’s personal involvement in social groups and settings, while significantly establishing positive interaction of social bonds with friends, family and community. With low-income families and individual’s maiden journey into cultured events, i.e., museums, operatic and classical concerts within a leisure and not ‘forced’ framework, children especially feel a full sense of worthiness, acceptance and excitement to expand even more into such activities.

The mental health benefit associated with leisure travel creates a sense of social identity and belonging. Leisure travel plays a major and important role in improving social skills in children, especially over a prolonged sense of time. Children of parents who made it a family mantra and duty to introduce them to various locations and destinations are far more likely to go on to be far better socially adjusted adolescents and adults. They tend to be much calmer, more outgoing, feel more secure in various settings, while a child or adult who did not travel, generally feel like a fish out of water in unfamiliar territory.

The association brought about with leisure travel brings on a personal feeling of accomplishment and self-motivation. Those personally associated with children and adults who suddenly find themselves the recipient of a first time vacation, see firsthand the exciting benefit that travel brings. They see the returning journey to relax, unwind and take it easy has also rejuvenated and reconnected them to their inner self as wonderful proof as to what vacationing can do. Travel helps those individuals to maintain a healthy balance of inner self worth. That is why the wealthy always make leisure travel an integral part of their health and wellness outlook.

For those on the lower end of the spectrum and primarily because of limited income, many inner city and rural living adults and children have had little to no access to travel and vacation resources. The rate of participation is very limited; this shapes the feelings and outcomes with regard to such activities. Most just either stay home or visit with nearby friends and/or family. With today’s economy in such a slump, it is more important than ever for families and individual’s to find ways to kick back and relax, away from such obvious options.

It is quite necessary to increase one’s personal time away, even including time alone to improve individual social well being, helping to transcend poverty. Understanding the need for disadvantaged people to get access to leisure travel is very critical to understanding one of the dire problems facing African-American, Latino and underprivileged white communities mindset. Without having gone beyond the boundaries of their own neighborhood or state lines, many socially perish for lack of financial resources to access outside of it.

“As a child sees, he does.”

It is very important that children experience all aspects of travel and personally realize how much fun and excitement it brings. Children who travel quite frequently as opposed to children who do not, grow into happy, independent, well-adjusted adults who continue to travel. Both generally grow up to either repeat their love, excitement and independence of travel or their aloof and indifferent feelings onto their own future children.

Celebrating newfound culture and personal wellness is possible once an individual has traveled outside of his or her ‘comfort’ zone. It is imperative for one’s own psychological well being to be able relax, enjoy and fit right in with any given surrounding. Travel tends to bring about a positive attitude in and transcends the personalities of those who have the ability to do so. It is a transformation that for some is almost indescribable, like seeing sub tropic cloud formation, blue green water or plants and animals not native to their own region. The euphoric feeling of relaxation is so overpowering that they want to travel again and again to keep feeling that contentment. Leisure travel reflects the beauty and frailty that is the human experience.

Effective Leisure Skills and Activities

Effective use of leisure skills depends on the factors of time, money, people, and available activities when developing a significant social life. Make a list of activities available nearby your area by searching from internet, magazines, newspapers etc. in your free time. This is a significant step in deciding what type of activities a person might start doing. If you want to be involved with a health club that only meets on the weekends, but you work on the weekends, it would not be a good idea to vigorously pursue becoming a member. Although it is good to be involved with so many social and other networks that they are too tired to work.

Many leisure activities cost some money. If an activity costs so much money that you having a difficult time paying for rent, groceries, fees, transportation, etc., you may have to change your choices. There are many leisure activities that cost little or no money.

One of the best and economical ways to get involved in leisure activities is to meet people. Of course, you may have to get involved in a leisure activity first in order to meet people who have the similar interests. You can meet people in your neighborhood, church, park, and work.

Depending on where a person lives, the number of leisure activities that are available is going to vary. A person living in a metro city is going to have a better selection of activities than person living in a small city or town. Remind that most towns have holy places, parks, playground and opportunities to volunteer. You can choose according your needs and interests.

Have a look in newspapers, you may go through the sections that listings of leisure activities going on in the society. You can go with your friends for movies and other entertainment, sports, outdoor recreation, volunteer opportunities, yoga classes and health clubs. You should identify three activities you would like to participate in over the next few days. Remember to consider the cost, time available, and transportation. Talk about with your friends or spouse why you would be interested in participating in the leisure activities you chose.

Ask yourself, as an elective activity, have you met in two weeks without an expert trainer, and have you participated in any of the leisure activities. Think about the cost, whether you enjoyed it, and whether you met people at the activity that you may do something with in the future.
